Summary This study primarily looked at how likely stress hormones foretell future relationship satisfaction, dissatisfaction, and divorce. A number of other things were looked at to see if they had an effect on relationship outcomes but most were found to be insignificant. 90 couples participated in the study, having their stress hormones function assessed during their first year of marriage, Time 1, and then followed-up on 10 years later. The results showed that neuroendocrine functioning was related to marital dissolution and satisfaction 10 years later. Epinephrine levels of divorced couples were 34% higher during conflict discussion within their first year of marriage, Time 1, 22% higher throughout the day, and both epinephrine and norepinephrine were higher at night in comparison with those who remained married. Additionally, ACTH levels during Time 1 conflict were twice as high among women whose marriages were considered to be troubled 10 years later than among women whose marriages were not considered troubled. Also, couples whose marriages were troubled produced 34% more norepinephrine during conflict, 24% more norepinephrine during the day and 17 % more at night time during Time 1 than those whose marriages were not troubled. This study was an initial step in the process of incorporating physiological responses into established models of marital outcomes. Discussion Questions 1. Does anyone know why it is that a high level of epinephrine is the main hormone involved in divorce whereas a high level of norepinephrine is the main one involved in relationship dissatisfaction? Is it possible that one is related to stability and the other to satisfaction? 2. Why do you think it is that men in satisfied relationships reported talking to their spouses more than men in dissatisfied relationships, but women in both groups reported no difference? 3. Do you think that it is the way in which an individual deals with a relationship and conflict that produces these changes in stress hormones or is it that some people just naturally have higher levels of stress hormones, which causes them to act a certain way in relationship, which increases the probability of getting divorce? (like cohabitation) 4. Do you think that these results would be different if done with homosexual s, since there obviously would not be any gender differences? Multiple Choice Question 1. In Divorced Versus Married Couples, Enduring Vulnerabilities Model what was the only finding that even approached significance? a. That marital satisfaction at Time 1 was different between those who divorced and those who remained married. b. That talk time was significantly different between couples whom later divorce and those who remained married. c. That great aggression was shown among the couples that were divorced at follow-up than those who remained married. Essay Question If t is eventually proven to be true that stress hormone functioning in your first year of marriage can without a doubt predict if your relationship will last and if you would be satisfied, would you want your partner and yourself to be tested, why or why not?
