Summary This study primarily looked at if sexual orientation was a matter of choice. Participating in this study were 90 women, 45 in heterosexual relationships and 45 in lesbian relationships. The results showed that 60% of women with female partners and 41% of women with male partners stated that they believed that they had chosen the sexual orientation of their current relationship. But the two groups reasons for their choices were different, lesbians cited the potential for emotional fulfillment and intimacy as the reason and a third of women with male partners cited their connections to family, religion, and/or their educational background as reasons for their relationship choice. Another thing that the results showed were that the majority of women from both groups reported being more generally intimate with women, both emotionally and intellectually. The results also showed that 80% of women in homosexual couples and 43% of women in heterosexual couples said that their were perceived differences between homosexual and heterosexual couples. This study did not suggest that sexual orientation is solely determined by rational deliberation, but it did reveal that a significant number of women perceived conscious evaluation to be an important component in the complex process of sexual orientation. Do you think the results involving sexual orientation were accurate or just a result of seeing things with retrospection and wanting control? 4. What do you think this study would be like if done with homosexual and heterosexual men? 5. In Table 5 it shows the differences between homosexuals and heterosexuals as perceived by both groups. Why do you think they have different perceived differences? Why is it that heterosexual women thought they were different in regard to the ability to raise children and that they thought gays suffer greater stresses due to discrimination, whereas lesbians saw their differences as positive ones such as greater intimacy, equality, and more satisfying communication?
