1. I think many people find Buss's theory offensive because it makes humans seem like animals. We have a brain and we think and feel more than other species, but this theory makes it seem like we do not. It makes it seem as though men are just wandering fertilizers who really do not care about whether their offspring are nurtured or not, they just care about passing on as many genes as possible. They are able to do this because their minimal investment is at conception. This theory just seems to give men an excuse to sleep around. It also makes women seem like fortune hunters looking for the richest men out there so that they can be taken care of. 2. An example that might support Buss's view are fathers who abandon their children. Another example could be men donating sperm to a sperm bank. They are spreading their genes without investing any time or resources into their offspring, they are just concerned with conception. Young women marying older wealthier men would also support Buss's theory. Women are supposed to care about resources more than fertility because men are fertile for most of their lives. Therefore, it would make sense to choose someone older who is established who will like provide for any children. 3. Derry would think that these examples would be no good if males really wanted their traits passed on because they would not be around to nurture the traits. She is arguing that nurture has more to do with passing on the traits than just genetics alone. If men want their skills and so forth to show up in the next generation, tan they have to nurture their offspring in order for those skills to be passed on. Leaving it up to someone else reduces the chances that the skills and traits will be nurtured. 4. I think I agree with Derry's view the most. nurturing is important and the parent that invests most in a child will likely have a child that reflects their traits more than the other parent. While things are genetically inherited and do show up, it is possible for the caring parent to nurture them in a different direction or not nurture them at all. I believe nurturing is very important to who a person becomes. 5. The evolutionary perspective would suggest that women are shorter than men because men originally liked shorter women and chose them to mate with. Women in turn were attracted to taller men and so the adaptive genes were passed on. If men did not like taller women, than the gene would tend to fade away.
