Harris’ study in 2000, “Sexual and Romantic Jealousy in Heterosexual and Homosexual Adults”, attempted to further examine previous research. Studies prior to the current one at hand focused solely on hypothetical sexual and emotional infidelity; the results showed that women were more upset by emotional infidelity and men were upset by sexual infidelity. Harris decided to incorporate actual memories of the experience of infidelity into the research along with interest in sexual orientation. The study was done through mail, flyers, various organizations, and other means to avoid participant’s face to face contact with the researcher. Questions involving hypothetical cheating were asked first due to the previous research. The results showed that heterosexual men were more likely to be upset about hypothetical sexual infidelity than women. Examination of responses by sexual orientation showed that heterosexual men and women were more upset by hypothetical sexual infidelity than homosexual men and women. The second portion of questions showed that 70% of the participants had experienced cheating in a relationship. When this was taken into consideration, there was no shown difference in the degree to which they were upset by either sexual or emotional infidelity. The data also showed no correlation between how individuals felt about hypothetical infidelity and actual infidelity. Questions: 1) If 70% of participants had experienced cheating, why do you think that there was no correlation between hypothetical and real infidelity? Wouldn’t it make sense that the individuals that had experienced it would respond the same to both? 2) Why do you think that 70% of men from Germany, China, and the Netherlands reported being more upset by emotional infidelity than sexual? 3) From personal experience, do any of you agree or disagree with the results of the research? Why or why not? 4) The article states that men are upset more over sexual infidelity because evolutionarily speaking, men were unable to know if his wife’s baby was his own. Women are more upset by emotional infidelity because they fear losing the man’s resources. Do you agree with this theory or do you think there could be other explanations? 5) Why do you think that the homosexual population was more upset by emotional infidelity than sexual infidelity? Could it have anything to do with their awareness of an inability to reproduce? Essay Question: Give possible reasons for the difference in the following results of Harris’ 2000 study: Hypothetical situations of infidelity showed that men are more upset by sexual cheating than emotional cheating while women are the opposite. Real situations of infidelity showed no difference whatsoever.
