It is slightly worrisome to me that so many researchers that have been married and who studied close relationships are now divorced. I don't know the stats on it, but it seems to have come up frequently throughout the course. One possible explanation that was mentioned was self-evaluation maintenance theory. That was a little comforting for me at least. It doesn't seem like studying close relationships would cause a relationship to break apart, but there has to be something going on. It seems to me that learning about close relationships, communication, and maintenance theories would sustain relationships. I wonder if more people should take classes on close relationships. They are fascinating to learn about because everyone has personal experience. However, if someone learns about a pitfall of relationshps in class and recognizes that as part of their own relationship, that could cause some self-fulfilling prophecy situations. It could prevent such situations though too. It's hard to tell. It just has to be stressed that life is not perfect and there are going to be conflicts and bumps along the way. We are all just a little bit more prepared in dealing with them now.
