Gender Stereotypes Buss et al. 1. To be quite honest with you, I really do not find Buss’s explanation of sexual selection to be that offensive. I do believe that much of sexual selection is rooted in evolution and there are many aspects of sexual selection that I believe are unconscious and can only be explained through evolution. Why am I attracted to the women that I am attracted to? I know what I find attractive in women, but why? I don’t think that this can be explained in any other way then evolution; each individual has their own criteria for choosing a sexual partner. Scholars may find this offensive because his notion of sexual selection reduces us to animals in a way, and makes it seem as if there are no other aspects to mate selection besides evolved instincts. 2. There are many aspects of human sexual behavior that support Buss’s theory, and he mentions many of them in the article. Men do have a higher sex drive then women and do tend to have more sexual partners, which may be due to in part by the little time investment a man puts into reproduction. Men only need to provide their sperm whereas women have to devote 9 moths of their time to simply birth the child, and this does not include taking care of the child. Looking at sex from an evolutionary standpoint, men may also have more sex to ensure that the female produces a male. If a man is looking for a woman to reproduce his child and a woman is looking for a man that is intelligent, strong, and a good hunter so he can provide for her, these genes would most likely be more useful in a male then in a female. Buss fails to mention what impact the sex of the child would have on investment. 3. In the eyes of Derry and Silverstein, Buss’s notion of sexual behavior is invalid. Derry would state that the father would be forced to make a longer investment and support his child so he could teach his the social and survival skills that he holds, or having the child would be useless. This fatherly behavior would be important in developing the cortex of the brain in the child. Derry would also state that humans are like animals, but they are not animals, thus we can compare our sexual behavior to that of animals, but we cannot say it is exactly the same. One thing that Silverstein fails to mention in her argument is the possible role the shape of the penis plays in reproduction. The ape and human penis is shaped in such a way that when a male has sex with a female, his penis suctions out the semen of previous partners, thus improving the chances of the current males semen to make it to the woman egg. 4. I would have to say I agree with Derry the most, but I also understand where Buss is coming from. Social contexts do play a part in our sexual selection as Derry states, and he raises many valid points in his argument; specifically that males would need to make more of an investment in a child to teach them needed skills so that they also can be successful in reproduction. He also raises a good point in questioning the possibility of a female being able to copulate with many men within small communities of humans. 5. From an evolutionary perspective, women are shorter then men because women’s evolutionary role in a culture was to gather foods and prepare food, mend clothing, etc. Thus, a woman had no seed to be tall, whereas a man, who was constantly our hunting and wrestling with large animals to provide food, would benefit from being tall. A shorter woman may also imply wider hips for birthing.
