An Indian woman who at the age of 25 was arranged to be married wrote this article. During that time in her life, she was living in America and slowly becoming westernized with her ideas and plans for the future. Once Shoba arrived home to meet her future husband, she came to discover things, which were not exactly what she wanted in a relationship. The man whom Shoba’s parents chose was not exactly the type of guy that Shoba was planning on marrying, but she realized that the criteria her parents used to choose this man has been effective in plenty of past arranged marriages. The criteria which was used by her parents in selecting her husband was; the background of the person’s family, economic background, religion, caste, values must be similar, his personality and physical traits must be different of complementary, and finally they must be astrologically compatible. Ram, Shoba’s future husband, fell under each category nicely and so both were wed. The qualities that Shoba first believed would be in her husband fell by the wayside as she slowly grew to a strong friendship with the stranger. With every new relationship come hardships, but the original love she predicted to be there from the start slowly grew as each partner grew within the relationship. These happenings surprised Shoba, but in the end, she realized that love must be earned. Building a marriage on friendship, commitment, support and humor came to provide the best examples of creating a successful arranged marriage.
