Ginny Naples Discussion Questions Buss 1. I think that the theory buss has developed is looked down upon because it melts the entire sex cycle down to a simple theory. Also, I think that it is hard for some people to take his theory because they have grown up believing that there are many differences between males and females and they are not willing to see it through any other perspective. Scientists have a problem with his ideas because of their own theories. For example, if they do not agree with the paternity theory, they are not going to agree with much that Buss has to say. 2. According to Buss, the many single mothers who have not gotten as much assistance from the fathers support his theory. I also believe that the children who have fathers who stick around support his ideas. The single mothers show the idea that the minimum a man can give is his sperm and it also shows the responsibilities now given to males. The children of functional relationships show a very different side. They are the individuals who show how the resources of the father can attribute to better outcomes. 3. The other two theories would state that these two examples would be inaccurate. Derry would state that the genes would not necessarily be passed down in the children of single mothers because the fathers would not be present to teach the children how to embrace such genetic abilities. Silverstein would be more likely to state that the single mothers would be better off if they had experienced several mates. The range of options would possibly eliminate single mothers because the rate of finding a potential father would increase. 4. I personally like the view of Derry. He brings up the point that we have always been a species that sticks to long term relationship and he continues to give reasons that males must stick around in order for their genes to emerge in the child. While I do believe that the minimum an individual can give is passing on his genes, the constant grooming of his offspring would be the only way to ensure the genes pass on. I think that Buss has overlooked some of the ideas that Derry has gone back in to explore and the ideas are very important to understanding human sexual behavior. 5. According to the evolutionary theory, women are shorter now because men found them more desirable. Since the short women in the past were the ones that the men went after in order to reproduce with, their genes passed on resulting in more and more short females. Now, women have evolved to be a shorter gender. The same process must have occurred through men. Women always liked the taller men, resulting in their evolution.
