Summary: Rusbult wanted to study three different ideas pertaining to the investment model. The first idea she wanted to study was the overall power of investment model variables in predicting satisfaction and commitment. The second idea she wanted to study was how the investment model variables changed over time. The third, and most important, idea she wanted to study was the relationship between the investment model variables and stay/leave behaviors. By conducting the study based on surveys given every 17 days over a total of 9 months (if the people lasted that long) the results varied. The results for the first idea showed that increased rewards led to greater satisfaction, whereas a change in costs did not affect satisfaction. However after 3 – 7 months of involvement an increase in costs led to decreased satisfaction. The results also showed that higher satisfaction and investment size but poorer alternatives promoted higher commitment. In regards to the second idea the results showed that over time rewards increase, costs increase, satisfaction increases, alternative quality declines, investment size increases, and level of commitment increases. Stayers had increased rewards, slightly increased costs, declined alternative quality, increased investment size, and increased commitment. Leavers, who are individuals that terminate their relationship, had only slightly increased rewards, greatly increased costs, satisfaction declined, alternative quality greatly increased, investment size declined, and commitment decreased. The abandoned, the individuals who get broken up with, had few increases in rewards, great increases in costs, small increases in satisfaction, decline in alternative qualities, high investment size, and moderate commitment. Discussion Questions: 1. With a three-factor model which includes satisfaction, alternatives, and investments mean were not significantly affected by the quality of their alternatives, whereas women increased in commitment due to low alternative qualities. Why are women affected by the quality of alternatives but men are not significantly affected? 2. In formula formation satisfaction is basically equivalent to rewards minus costs. When changing from the three-factor model to the four-factor model which includes rewards, costs, alternatives, and investments instead of just satisfaction, alternatives, and investments men become more committed due to increased costs. Why is it that according to the three-factor model the variation in costs has no significant affect on satisfaction which means men aren’t significantly more committed, but with the four-factor model the variation in cost increases men’s commitment? 3. Why are costs more prevalent the longer you’ve been in a relationship? 4. Why would increased costs increase commitment for stayers? Have you ever stayed in a relationship with increased costs? What are some examples from personal experience or movies? 5. How would the study results change if Rusbult had observed relationships instead of basing the results of self-perceptions? Would perceived rewards and costs be the same as actual rewards and costs? 6. On page 94 for the question “To what extent are you ‘attached’ to your partner” there is an initial jump from 4.59 – 8.03. Why do people become more attached in between Time 0 and Time 1 surveys more than other times? (Keep in mind that the people in the study had been going out for an average of about 4 weeks before completing the very first survey at Time 0). 7. Why do the abandoned individuals seem to not recognize that they have the alternative of being alone instead of being in a relationship? Multiple Choice Question: What results are true of the abandoned group? A. Decreased rewards, increased costs, decreased satisfaction, increased alternative quality, decreased investment size, and decreased commitment. B. Slightly increased rewards, increased costs, slightly increased satisfaction, decreased alternative quality, increased investment size, and slightly increased commitment. C. Increased rewards, slightly increased costs, increased satisfaction, decreased alternative quality, increased investment size, and increased commitment. D. Decreased rewards, decreased costs, decreased satisfaction, decreased alternative quality, decreased investment size, and increased commitment. The correct answer is B. Essay Question: Explain the investment model in terms of the three-factor model and the four-factor model. Then explain how these models affect men and women over time.
