Widmer’s article looked at 24 different countries attitudes toward non-marital sex. The participants from each country were asked to rate how they felt about a premarital sex, sex before the age of 16, extramarital sex, and homosexual either by mail, self-completion or face-to-face contact. After Widmer received the results he put each country in one of six clusters. The four main clusters were teen permissives, sexual conservatives, homosexual permissives and moderate residuals. Teen permissive countries showed a higher level of acceptance for teenage and premarital sex. The sexual conservative cluster showed a strong disapproval for all types of non-marital sex. Homosexual permissives showed a greater level of acceptance for homosexual sex but average acceptance for the other forms of sex. The moderate residuals were found to not be very distinguishable from the average response. The other two clusters were Japan and Philippines; they both had their own cluster because they did not fit one of the four main clusters. Widmer also found that 81% of attitudes toward marital sex are shared across all 24 countries, while only 14% of attitudes are attributable to the six clusters and 5% are country specific.
