Evolutionary psychology hypothesizes that men demonstrate jealous behavior because there is no way for them to know if the child that their mate is carrying is truly theirs. They may also demonstrate these behaviors as a way to deflect mate poaching. The set of 3 studies I will talk about today investigated mate retention behaviors in males and whether they were predictors of abusive relationships. Mate Retention Behaviors were assessed by the MRI and were defined as Intersexual Manipulation (direct guarding, negative inducements, and positive inducements) and Intrasexual Manipulation (public signals of possession). Direct guarding consisted of violence, concealment of mate, monopolizing her time and restricting her sexual autonomy. It was expected that direct guarded and intersexual negative inducements would be retaliated to partner direct violence (Predictions1&2). Also, it was predicted that men’s use of positive inducements will be negatively be related to violence and use of public signals of possession would be positively related to violence (Predictions 3&4). In studies one and two 461 men and 560 women not married or dating participated. Men filled out the MRI and women filled out the Violence Assessment Index and the Injury Assessment Index. Study 1: Results were consistent with predictions for 1 and 2. Correlations for direct guarding and Intersexual negative inducements correlated with their scores on the Overall violence index results did not support prediction 3. Study 2: Where the women reported on the men’s actions, the results again supported 1&2, but not 3. Three tactics were most correlated with female directed violence; vigilance, concealment of mate, and emotional manipulation. Study 3: Had 107 couples who had been married less than a year participate. Husbands completed the MRI and wives completed the Spouse Influence Report (not the VAI or IAI). Researchers correlated husband’s reports of their mate retention with wives’ reports of violence. Predictions 1,2, and 4 were shown, when husbands self-reported direct-guarding, intersexual negative inducements, and signs of public possession. In this study vigilance was shown to be the highest ranking in correlation with violence again wives.
