I think that midterms and other things can either bring people together or separate people from each other depending upon how people study. In the case you mentioned with people staying up all night studying for a mid-term I agree with what your saying, it kind of relates to the study done by Schacter where people are closer due to more anxiety and stress. However in a case where a person study's alone and gets really caught up in what their doing I think it might hurt that person. Actually last term one of my close friends got carried away in school work and spent every waking moment on it, which made her extremely irritable and this made others not want to be around her because her attitude made other people feel just as depressed as she was. Though I guess in either circumstance you can say that misery does seem to enjoy company after all.
