In the article “Women’s Preferences for Male Behavioral Displays Change Across the Menstrual Cycle”, it is stated that ovulation is assumed to begin 15 days before the end of a woman’s cycle with fertility being on the incline from day 6 to its peak at day 12. This interval of time is when the female is considered to be fertile. The study that we will discuss is interested in whether females had different preferences for male behavior based on what day they were on in their cycle. The researchers used 76 men averaging the age of 18.8 years that were each individually interviewed on video camera by an attractive female for a fake potential lunch date. They were asked to talk about their self which was on the first minute of the tape, and then to respond to a male competing with them for the date which was the second minute. The 237 participating women watched either the first minute or second minute of the tape. They then rated the men on whether they were attractive as a long or short term mate. They also rated the men on 18 various qualities that they saw in them such as nerdishness, derogation of competitor, nice personality, and so on. The research also used estimates of the probability of conception for each female on the day that she rated male participants and they also came up with a mean of a 28.7 day cycle. The results showed that the highest desire for a short term relationship with a man showing social presence and direct intra-sexual competitiveness was highest around day 11, and the lowest around day 3. A long term relationship with the men was shown to be most desirable around days 17 and 21, while the lowest was around day 14 of the cycle.
