Summary: Social Pressures in Informal Groups: A Study of Human Factors in Housing addresses the significance of location and proximity in how we choose our friends. Festinger and his colleagues interviewed and studied the residents of the Westgate West apartment complex at M.I.T. The apartment complex was for married couples that were attending the college after they had returned from the war. The people were relatively homogeneous considering they were all married, veterans, and students at M.I.T. They were all between the ages of 20 and 35. The average age was about 26, which means they were older and more mature than the average college student. It was found that both physical and functional distance played a role in how the people in the apartment complex choose their friends. For instance, with physical distance, it was more likely that people in apartments next to each other would choose each other as friends. And for practical distance, it was more likely that the people upstairs would choose the people downstairs who were closest to the stairs. One flaw in the study that the authors recognized was how homogeneous the people in the apartment complexes were. They recognized there could be different results with a more heterogeneous sample. Discussion Questions: 1. Share some of your experiences with living in the dorms as freshman in relation to who you were friends with and their proximity to you. 2. One significant factor in the Westgate West experiment was how similar the residents in the apartment building were. Based on your own experiences in the dorm rooms and other observations, do you think the experiment would have turned out similarly with a more heterogeneous sample? 3. If you look at Figure 2 on page 47 you’ll note that apartments 3 and 4, and 8 and 9 are farther apart than the other neighboring apartments. Even though this is so the authors still counted these apartments as being one unit apart. Do you think this would play a role in these two apartments choosing each other as friends? 4.
