The New Flirting Game is a different approach to the reason that we try to attract potential partners. The article definitely does not make flirting to be as serious and determining as evolutionary psychologists do. Lott states that that flirting is as culturally modulated as it is biologically driven and takes more of a lighthearted approach. She states that we flirt to find potential partners and just to have fun. Lott points out that although men think they are making the first move, it is usually women that get flirtation rolling through nonverbal cues. She references Moore in saying that it is not the women that have the best hip-to-waist ratios or the most symmetrical features that attract the most men but those that send out the most flirtatious signals. Moore also came up with 52 different flirting techniques that women use to attract potential partners. These signals range from glancing at their interest to hiking up their skirts. All of these nonverbal cues lead researchers to believe that women are not as submissive as they were once thought to be. These flirting techniques are also used in adolescents. Girls use a majority of the techniques that their older counterparts do to attract members of the opposite sex. Although, these signals were less natural, fluid, and often it was apparent that young girls knew what they were doing. Lott also reviews lesbian’s attraction techniques. She states that the distinction between the more masculine of the two and the more feminine of the two has returned as of the 1990’s. It was gone for a period between the 1960’s and 1990’s. The article also includes accounts of bisexuals and cross dressers who are able to compare interactions with both men and women. 1. I wanted to know everyone’s opinion on if it is the man or the woman that makes the first move? (Does a woman making glances across the room count as making the first move?) 2. This particular article makes women to be much less submissive than they are normally thought to be? Why do you think this article takes such a different view? (Do you think it has something to do with the observers? Everyone sees things in different ways so do you think those that saw women at bars and meeting places as submissive, were just assuming that is what their body language and non verbal cues meant?) It’s difficult to take an objective point of observations when you’ve had previous exposure to the idea. 3. Would you say that women control the pace that the interaction is going? Can you see how this might be connected to evolutionary theory? 4. The way the article makes it sound like women have this almost scientific approach to flirting. Do you think women think about it that much when they are trying to attract someone else or does it come more naturally? (Women know what is attractive so they probably think about it but not to the extent that the article implies) 5. The data collection made by Perper in the 1980’s states that men make the first move and the research done by Moore in the 1990’s insists that it is women who initiates the interaction. What are some possibilities that could account for this difference? 6. According to evolutionary theorists flirting is all about trying to allure a suitable partner to procreate with. How do you think gays’ and lesbians’ flirting plays into this? (Are they still looking for someone that is willing to nurture and support them even though they aren’t able to have children?)
