Clark and Mills’s experiments looked at how subjects viewed an individual after receiving benefits (or having received no benefits) from that person in either communal or exchange conditions. In the first experiment unmarried male students participated in a vocabulary task with an attractive woman that they thought was either a) married (exchange condition) or b) unmarried (communal condition). The experiment was set up so that the male subjects would receive the easier task and finish first receiving a point towards winning. When the subjects were finished they offered help to the woman by giving her some of their letters. The woman would than finish her task on time and either give the subject one of her earned points or none of her points. The results showed that when in the exchange condition the woman was liked more when she gave a benefit than when she didn’t. However in the communal condition the woman was better liked when she didn’t give a benefit as opposed to when she did. The second experiment was similar to the first except now the subjects(who were now female) had the harder task. This experiment looked at how the participants responded to the request of points and aid conditions in communal and exchange relationships. The results showed that if a person requests a benefit after they are aided they are more liked in an exchange relationship but less liked in a communal relationship. The results also show that in exchange relationships when a person requests a benefit but they have not aided the other person this decreases the other person’s attraction to them.
