This study measured the odor preferences of heterosexual men, heterosexual women, gay men, and lesbians. They collected samples of body odor from each of the four groups and had participants make forced-choice preferences of four combinations. Participants chose between odors from heterosexual males and gay males, heterosexual males and heterosexual females, heterosexual females and lesbians, and between gay males and lesbians. They found that there were clear differences of preference related to the perceiver’s gender and sexual orientation. This suggests that gay males and lesbians produce odorants that distinguish them from heterosexuals and that they perceive odors differently. Differences in perceptions and production of these odorants could be due to several biological or environmental factors such as familiarity with the odors, lifestyle factors, differences in axillary flora (or armpit bacteria), or differences in genetic alleles (alternative forms of genes). Previous research has determined that individuals’ odor prints are primarily established by the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and that this may influence sexual orientation as well.
