Robert J. Sternberg came up with the triangular theory of love to explore the different classifications and components of love. According to this theory, love is made up of three components: an intimacy component, a passion component, and a decision/commitment component. These are represented by the three points on a triangle. Each component then generates different kinds of love. The intimacy component by itself results in liking, which is classified by the set of feelings and experiences in true friendships. The passion component alone brings infatuated love, which is “love at first sight” or obsessive love. The decision/commitment component alone leads to empty love, which can be found in stagnant relationships or arranged marriages. You can then combine the different components for an additional four types of love. Intimacy and passion leads to romantic love, but lacks a serious commitment. Intimacy and commitment leads to companionate love, which many relationships evolve into after passion wanes. Passion and commitment leads to fatuous love, but this seldom lasts. Finally, the combination of all three components results in consummate love, which is considered complete love. There is also nonlove, which is the absence of all three components. This is actually, what most of our interpersonal relationships are as causal interactions. Each of the components has different natural time courses, which guarantees that love will change throughout a relationship. The success or failure of a relationship often depends on the couple’s adaptability to these changes. Each relationship has several triangles, which may or may not be the same size and shape. When one component of love is dominant, the triangle is unbalanced. The intensity of love changes the size of the triangle. There can also be different real and ideal triangles, self versus other triangles, self-perceived and other-perceived triangles and thought versus action triangles. It is imperative for any love to be translated into action for any relationship to last.
