I agree that make-up is a form of deception, but I also agree that we do not like to think of it in that way. I watched part of "The Human Face" on TLC several years ago which went over make-up and its history and background. Blush and eyeshadow especially are supposed to create the illusion that we, as women, are sexually aroused. We don't think about it today, but that was its original purpose. Why does it enhance our features? Maybe because men tend to view the fact that we look sexually aroused to be attractive. Women used to pinch their cheeks and bite their lips before make-up became common, so they knew to get the blood flowing to those areas because men liked it. Make-up could make women seem aroused when they are really not, which is a form of deception. Again, this idea is not actively in our minds, but it could be part of the evolution idea. I agree that high self-monitors are more likely to change their make-up habits according to what their partners like.
